    Tiger Explorer 1200 Install

    TheRedOnesAreFaster

    I bought these because I thought they looked cool, and even cooler with the LED turn signals.

    And they do.

    I thought they would also give me better weather protection and protection for my hands and controls in the event of the crash. The crash protection is almost certainly there with the sturdy aluminum bar across the inside of the guard. I am not convinced that they offer better weather protection, though. Even with the optional extensions, I don’t think that I get better wind and weather protection; the top of the guards sit slightly lower than the stock units. It is possible that I did not angle the mounts properly, and they could be rotated upwards a bit.

    Aesthetically, it’s up to you you if these look better than the stock units. If you’re looking for better weather protection than stock, and you don’t plan on adding turn signals, you might be better served by the less expensive Bark Buster handguards.

    A couple of install notes on the 1200 Explorer:

    1. There is a second set of installation instructions and 2 bolts in a second bag in the kit- you’ll need the bolts and the instructions to install these on your Tiger. The main instruction sheet does not have instructions for the 1200 (I had thought I had to adapt the instructions for the 1050 Tiger; I didn’t notice the 2nd set until after I’d called tech support).

    2. If you are going to install the LED turn signals, you may or may not need the resistor set. If you have stock incandescent bulbs, and are removing those and will be using the LEDs exclusively, you will need the resistors. I left the stock bulbs in place, and piggybacked the LEDs off of those, and this seems to work fine without the resistors; I do not have any flash rate issues……you will have fun getting to the wires for the turn signals up front, though.

    Overall, I like these. The quality is good, they look nice, but if I hadn’t thought that the LED turn signals would be cool, I would have gone the Bark Buster route instead.

    Look great on the bike

    Bob

    The guards function well, and look great, I bought all the options – lights, extensions, etc the product quality is good, the install instructions are not so good. The black steel “backbone” pieces are designed for a specific side (right/left) but they are not labelled as such. It is very easy to mix them up – the guards have much less adjustability if the backbones are mixed up. The wiring connections for the optional lights are not that impressive – for this price point I would expect connectors that would plug into the factory wiring harness. I cut the provided wiring and attached better electrical connectors

    Good Quality & Best Looking Option IMO

    Blair

    Overall, I’m happy with the Kobra Handguard Kit;
    -All components are high quality.
    -Fitment was perfect for the 1200 and installation was extremely easy.
    -In my opinion, the Kobra is the best option to match the style of the new Triumph Tigers.

    A couple of things kept me from giving a perfect 5 stars;
    -Wind protection could be better. Even with the optional “Extension Kit” I found it difficult to place the handguard in a position that would block the wind from the top of my hand and finger tips at the same time.
    -Most things in this kit are powder coated black except the mounts that are used to clamp around the bars, which have an unfinished aluminum look. I would prefer that everything is coated black for a more pleasing look and I think it’s reasonable to ask for with the price point.

    Overall, I’m happy I went with these and I would recommend them to others.

    Great style!

    Raja

    The handguards protect the hands from the wind and rain, but also provide a layer of protection for the bike during a fall or tip over.

    The KOBRA plastics look great with the lines and colors of the Tiger 800! Being able to add in indicators is a huge plus for the future.
