Yamaha sort of messed up with the design of the hand guards on the Trace 900/Tracer 900GT. They’re too narrow and too low exposing your hand/glove to direct wind and rain. Further, there is no up-down adjustment potential because the inner side of the guard-body is mounted to the mirror perch; move the guard, move the mirror, and you don’t want to do the later. If you need hand guards as I do as a cold weather protection, eventually you’re either going to buy a complete aftermarket set or go with an extension. Obviously, I went with the extension. The GIVI is proving to be the better choice over the alternatives I reviewed. The GIVI adds 2.75″ (70mm) in height and has a wrap around design that helps keep cold air and rain off your glove. Unlike the two main competitors that I looked at, the GIVI has a four-point mount; the others had two. Pull up the install instructions in this listing to see the mounting; note that the hardware to mount the GIVI extenders is included. I can’t speak to the thickness of the competitors, but the GIVI mics in at a sturdy 3mm. Lastly, I’ve tested them in a number of road conditions, including at highway speeds and there is no noticeable buffeting or vibration. Actually lastly, the GIVI does not interfere with the stock screen, nor does it interfere with my larger touring screen.
