SW-MOTECH Crash Bars Engine Guards for Kawasaki KLR650 ’87-’07

All components are protected against corrosion by sandblasting and powdercoating. High-strength frame mounting points. Black.

Constructed of 26.9mm outer-diameter mild steel tubing.

Fits with:
– original Kawasaki plastic skidplate
– Twisted Throttle’s aluminum skidplate (sold separately)

Requires modification (notches cut in plate) to work with:
– Ricochet (a.k.a. Utah Sport Cycle / Happy Trail / MSR / Moose) skidplate (made in the USA)
– Cyclops (a.k.a. Studebaker / KLR650.com) skidplate (this is an overseas copy of the Ricochet skidplate)

Does not fit with oversize IMS plastic fuel tank installed (trust us – our in-house KLR owner and metal fabricator guy tried)

The infamous KLR650 “Doohickey” (the left-side balancer chain tension adjuster) is accessible with the crashbar installed.

Includes two metric M8x70 replacement bolts to upgrade your original subframe bolt strength (located between the rear end of the tank and the front end of the seat) from grade 8.8 to grade 10.9 – stronger is better!

If the crashbar will be used with an SW-MOTECH centerstand please request the free additional hardware kit “for use with centerstand” which includes four additional M8x40 hexagon socket head screws (4x part SC.00.08.040.01.912).

I have very good and very bad news for you. The bad news is that 4 weeks ago I nearly lost my life wrecking my KLR650 (equipped with the SW-MOTECH crashbars you sold me). My leg was shattered and it will be some months before I can walk again. But that’s the risk we take to play.

Now for the good news. Those crash bars you sold me worked perfectly. The right side of the bike took a major blunt hit (maybe a guard rail… not sure). The right side compressed about an inch and allowed a small dent in the tank and in the exhaust. It sprung back a half inch and all is well. The bike appears to then have fallen on it’s left side and skidded down the road a ways. The left side crash bar prevented any injury to the engine tank or any part of the bike save but the end of the handlebar and clutch lever. The bar is all scratched but gave 100% protection to all but the end of the handlebar. I am doubly impressed that the right side took the hit and bounced back. My little $170 investment in crash bars saved me over a thousand dollars in damage. The damage was so slight my son rode the bike home. I faired much worse but those SW-MOTECH bars are wonderful for the KLR650. Thought you might want to know about those wonderful crash bars you sell.

Well I dropped my KLR650 with SW-MOTECH crashbars about 5 times today. It was a really cool ride just a bit above my skill level. The crashbars did great. I mucked it 3 times in a marshy area and proceeded to lay it down a couple of times on a really steep section with a bunch of rocks. Good paint job on them too – they don’t look really that scuffed up.

Twisted Throttle told me that this crashbar was not going to fit my KLR650 Tengai model but I bought them anyway. I planned to cut and re-weld them but I had a pleasant surprise for a change. The SW-Motech crashbars fit fine with about a half inch of clearance on both sides at the bottom louver on the fairing side panels. It’s necessary to lift the back of the gas tank an inch or so for acces to the top subframe bolt to be exposed with the fairing side panels unpopped and unbolted at the bottom front but not completely removed. It took a little manipulating to pop it all back together again but I did it without damaging the footpegs. NO the plastic sump guard will not fit without a lot of trimming but I am making an aluminum one that will give some real protection. I have already made a cardboard model and hope to have it finished for my ride next weekend in West Virginia.
