The rack is designed for the European version of the Ninja 650, the ER-6F, so some modifications were necessary. First, I had to obtain two 8×70 MM bolts (with nylon washers) for the under seat mounting as the supplied bolts were not long enough. Then I drilled 9/16 ” holes with a step drill in the side panels for the bolts. Then I used 3/8 ” ID aluminum tubing for spacers. The main modification involves grinding down the mounting brackets so that they clear the tail panels. I used some Ninja black touch up paint I had around to repaint the modified areas. The rack is solid on the bike and I mounted the SW Motech Soft Luggage Carrier on top. I am very satisfied with this set up as it transforms the Ninja into a practical sport tourer and greatly enhances its commuting potential.

This rack assumes that your bike has the tail design with the black grab rails and the fitted side panels. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, this tail design was only released in Europe under the ER-6F model. I learned this after talking to both US and Canada Kawasaki and being unable to get the proper parts for the rear tail and external grab bars.
So, if you have a US or Canadian Ninja 650 with the flared side panels, then you most likely need to modify your side panels to accommodate a slot to fit the rack mounts. Or you can do what I’m doing and order the parts for the tail design from Europe (just note that the helmet lock needs to be mounted different as well so order that part also)
