Not DOT approved for on-road, street legal use

    Ronald Hocutt

Unfortunately I found out after purchasing these lights that they are not street legal, at least here in CT and probably elsewhere in the US. I went back to the description to see if I missed that point in the writeup but no, it wasn’t there. I guess some people don’t care about that but I do, so I wasted nearly $200 on a D4 I can’t use on the road unless I want to break the law. And just to make matters worse, I can’t even return it as Twisted Throttle won’t take it back if it’s been installed. It’s never seen one mile of road, but I did install it so they’re “very sorry.” I’m very disappointed in Twisted Throttle and Denali. It would seem to me that that should be a very prominent part of the description of the product, but I guess that’s just me. They look like nice lights but I guess I’ll have to look elsewhere for my parts.

We are sorry to hear you are unhappy with the lights you have. None of our DENALI lights carry a SAE/DOT rating for a “road legal” light and are intended for “offroad” use only, however we will be releasing SAE/DOT approved lights this summer.
In all our years selling these lights, this is the first time we have had a customer announce that these are not street legal. We can assure you our products are in all 50 states here in the USA, and all over the world. We do ask that customers review local laws for any rules or limitations for auxiliary and aftermarket lights; but are confident that any Denali product install should be of no concern to local authorities – unless you go above and beyond what may be considered tolerable.

“…however we will be releasing SAE/DOT approved lights this summer.: Please publish (send me) this so I will not make the same mistake. I live in NC and plan to use these on the street. So grateful for Ronald’s review. That could be a game changer. Thank you

Our DENALI D3 fog light is out now and is shipping by the end of November. It is SAE/DOT street legal: https://twistedthrottle.com/shop/lighting/auxiliary-lights/driving-lights/denali-d3-led-fog-light-with-datadim-technology/

  2. Question

    Keith

I want to replace my existing OEM driving lights on my 2006 BMW R1200GSA. What do I need to order to replace the entire system? Including the handle bar switch and harness.

      Hey Keith,

I’m actually doing the same swap process right now with my 2014 BMW F800GSA.
Since my bike is already equipped with a CanBUS system I went the following way:
      1. I ordered a HEX ezCAN accessory manager – for your bike it should be the article # HEX.H3-EZR-002 here on twisted throttle.
      2. I ordered the Denali D4 (this item DNL.D4.050) twice
      3. I ordered a couple Denali 3 pin waterproof connectors (DNL.CTR.MT06) to be able to build my own wireing harness.

The HEX ezCAN accessory manager allows you to control up to 4 devices independently via your already existing BMW control units and there is no need to tap into any of the original BMW wireing harnesses. You simply connect the HEX ezCAN device to one of the connectory under your seat, connect it to your battery and thats it.
The Denali D4 lights you then connect via cables into either one or two conectory on the HEX ezCAN controller.
I went the way and connected the two D4s to two connectors on the HEX ezCAN so that I have more control about their features. It for example allows me to run both lights at daytime with max 20% capacity and as soon as it gets dark it automatically increases the light to 50%.
The reason why I connected them independently is that, when I use my turning lights, the Denali D4 (on the site I have the turning light on) is now flashing the alternating way – but the D4 on the other side stays on.

If you do not want to tinker around with building your own wireing harness for connecting the D4s with the HEX ezCAN, you could replace the two single D4s with the D4 Kit (DNL.D4.10000) which already includes a pre-fabricated wireing harness. But my experience with my wife’s bike (a BMW F700GS where I put Denali D2s on) is, that this harness might be a little to short and it is WAY harder to route that harness for both lights connected together than building your own harness and run the cables independently.

I actually use the HEX ezCAN controller not only to control the auxilary lights but also to control my auxilary power devices (turns my GPS and USB outlets on with turning the key and turn them off automatically) and also controls my extra brake lights (when throttleing down extra brake lights flash slowly and when hitting the brakes hard the additional brake lights flash fast and then stay on).

Have a look on the Hex ezCAN website http://www.hexezcan.com
