INNOVV Camera Systems & Denali CANsmart Installation

How to Install an INNOVV Camera System using the DENALI CANsmart Controller

With all the craziness happening out on the roads today, more drivers are opting to film their commute using dash cams. Dash cameras offering loop-recording video have been around for cars for a while now, but it can be difficult to use these systems on a motorcycle due to extreme environmental conditions. Recording with a GoPro or other action camera is a possibility but limits you with available storage space, mounting locations, power concerns, and more. INNOVV dash cameras are the answer for motorcyclists! INNOVV offers a line of small, high-resolution, and weather-proof cameras that are purpose-built to withstand the extreme conditions experienced by all riders from canyon carvers to taking laps at the motocross track. INNOVV cameras install easily on the front or rear of the bike, record video as well as location and speed, can transmit location back to family and friends following your journey, and offers a large storage capacity for footage and data. Better yet, you can download the free app to your phone and review footage immediately.  Our team has been getting a lot of questions about installing INNOVV cameras with a CANSmart controller, so we wanted to show you how to install this system in conjunction with the DENALI CANsmart.

These instructions show how to install any of the current INNOVV Camera models (including the INNOVV K5 and INNOVV K3) with the DENALI CANsmart.

DENALI 2.0 Plug-n-Play CANsmart™ Controller for BMW R1200LC & R1250 Series

The DENALI CANsmart is available for the most popular bikes including:

Standard Installation instructions:

  1. Work from the hard parts (camera and mount) back to the location of your CANsmart controller. Install the camera(s) in the desired location and run the wiring back to your CANsmart to insure that you have enough length. We always advise pulling the tank to properly route wires so that they don’t interfere with the operation of the motorcycle. Because of the ultra-wide angle of the cameras, some adjustments might be necessary once you have everything powered up.
  2. Install the DC/DC converter, DVR, and GPS device in a suitable location under the seat. Check to make sure all of your wiring reaches and that the devices do not interfere with removing the seat, accessing tools, etc.
  3. Disconnect your battery and connect the DC/DC converter to the battery and CANsmart controller.
    • Connect the Red Wire of the Innovv Camera to the positive battery terminal
    • Connect the Yellow Wire of the Innovv Camera to the yellow wire of the CANsmart Circuit using a positap
    • Connect the Black Wire of the Innovv Camera to the negative battery terminal
  4.  Connect your DC/DC converter to the DVR. Connect the GPS unit to the DVR. Connect both camera leads to the DVR.
  5. Turn your ignition and check your CANsmart settings on the computer.

More advanced(cleaner) plug & play installation:

This method uses a dedicated CANsmart circuit to power the INNOVV camera and removes the need to attach any additional leads to your battery. In this installation, the CANsmart is the only lead attached to your battery terminals. This method will require some minor wiring using the solder on DENALI Male Waterproof Connector or the crimp on DENALI Waterproof Connector.

  2. Because we are installing the INNOVV camera directly to the CANsmart circuit, you do not need the inline fuse holder on the red wire-you can keep it to avoid chopping the harness, just insure that your CANsmart circuit fuse rating matches the 1A fuse. Now would be a good time to measure your leads from your desired location for the DC/DC converter, DVR, and GPS unit to your CANsmart and trim wiring to fit. Measure twice, cut one folks. Velcro tabs are very helpful when mounting these units under the seat of your bike.
  3. Crimp or solder the red, yellow, and black wires from the INNOVV DC/DC converter to the DENALI Male Waterproof Connector, and attach the connector to the female lead of one of your CANSmart circuits.
    • Connect the red wire of the Innovv Camera to the red wire of the CANsmart Circuit
    • Connect the yellow wire of the Innovv Camera to the yellow wire of the CANsmart Circuit
    • Connect the black wire of the Innovv Camera to the black wire of the CANsmart Circuit
  4.  Connect your DC/DC converter to the DVR. Connect the GPS unit to the DVR. Connect both camera leads to the DVR.
  5. Turn your ignition and check your CANsmart settings on the computer. Installation instructions can be found here.
